New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India will now have 38 judges instead of the previous 34. The increase follows the Union government’s approval of a proposal to raise the sanctioned strength of judges in the apex court. The move is expected to help clear more than 92,000 pending cases across the country.
The backlog of cases in the Supreme Court has long been a major challenge for the judiciary. The decision to add more judges was taken with this challenge in mind, aiming to speed up disposal of cases and ensure timely justice for citizens. It is worth noting that the proposal to increase judicial strength had been under consideration for some time before being finalised now.
The increase in judge strength was effected through the Judicial Appointments Bill passed by Parliament. The Bill provided for the appointment of four additional judges to the Supreme Court. With the government’s proposal now approved, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court stands at 38, strengthening the judiciary and improving the justice delivery system.
