Odisha has achieved a significant milestone in wildlife conservation with the birth of four cubs to tigress Zeenat in the Similipal Tiger Reserve, marking a major boost to the state’s efforts to enhance tiger genetic diversity. The announcement came from Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on June 2, 2026, via a post on X, highlighting the successful translocation and subsequent thriving of the tigress in her new habitat.
Zeenat, originally from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, was relocated to Similipal in 2025 as part of an initiative to improve the genetic pool of the state’s tiger population. Similipal, renowned for its dense forest cover and ecological significance, had been facing challenges due to inbreeding among its tigers, which often exhibit pseudo-melanism—a condition where black stripes are more pronounced than typical Royal Bengal Tigers. The translocation of tigers like Zeenat and another female, Jamuna, was aimed at addressing this issue under the supervision of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
However, Zeenat’s initial adaptation to Similipal was not without challenges. After a 10-day acclimatization period in the core area of the reserve, she ventured outside the protected zone in early December 2025, straying into Jharkhand and West Bengal. Her movements triggered coordinated efforts by the forest departments of Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. On December 29, 2025, Zeenat was tranquilized and captured in West Bengal. Following a medical examination, she was safely returned to Similipal on the directives of the NTCA. To ensure her safety and continued acclimatization, a special enclosure was created in the southern part of the reserve, an area with dense forest cover and minimal human interference.
The southern division of Similipal, where Zeenat was released, covers a major portion of the core area of the reserve. This region was chosen for its conducive environment, which includes dense vegetation and the absence of anthropogenic pressure. Authorities reported that Zeenat remained under close observation in the enclosure, allowing her to gradually acclimatize before being fully released into the wild. This cautious approach underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of translocated tigers and the success of conservation efforts.
The birth of four cubs to Zeenat is particularly noteworthy for the Odisha Forest Department, given the previous challenges faced in tiger translocation efforts. Earlier, an attempt to introduce tigers from Madhya Pradesh to Satkosia Tiger Reserve had failed. One tiger died after falling into a poacher’s trap, while another had to be relocated back to Madhya Pradesh due to hostility from local communities within the reserve. These setbacks made Zeenat’s successful adaptation and the birth of her cubs a significant achievement for the state’s wildlife conservation initiatives.
In his statement, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi emphasized the importance of Zeenat’s successful translocation and the birth of her cubs. He noted that this achievement not only contributes to the increasing tiger population in Odisha but also highlights the state’s administrative foresight in protecting biodiversity and creating safe habitats for wildlife. Majhi further assured that the government remains fully committed to preserving the ecological balance of Similipal and strengthening wildlife conservation policies in the future.
The Similipal Tiger Reserve authorities have been implementing special measures to ensure the safety of Zeenat and her cubs. Continuous monitoring of their movements and health is being conducted to safeguard the family. The reserve, known for its unique ecosystem and significant tiger population, stands as a testament to Odisha’s dedication to wildlife conservation. With Zeenat’s successful reproduction, the state has taken a crucial step toward enhancing the genetic diversity of its tiger population and securing a sustainable future for these majestic animals.
