The Assam government has taken a significant step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by tabling a Bill in the state assembly. The Bill, titled "The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill," aims to consolidate and simplify laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships. Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora introduced the Bill on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who stated that the Bill sets a minimum age of 21 years for men and 18 years for women to get married, and prohibits polygamy.
