The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to prominent social activist Umar Khalid. The Union government had filed a case against Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. In this case, the Delhi Police registered a case against Umar Khalid under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Khalid was arrested by the police on September 14, 2020, and later, in May 2022, the police filed a supplementary chargesheet against him, alleging his involvement in a larger conspiracy behind the Delhi riots.
The main allegation against Umar Khalid in the case is that he allegedly planned and instigated the violence in Delhi from February 23 to 26, 2020. Charges were filed against him under UAPA and other laws. After his arrest, Khalid was placed in judicial custody. A special court, which had denied him bail, also rejected his first bail application in 2021.
