Big news for electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has temporarily stayed the proposed 10% fuel surcharge on electricity bills for June. It has also directed Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to submit a detailed response on the matter within seven days. This decision will come as a huge relief to nearly 30 million electricity consumers in the state, as they will now be spared the burden of an additional 10% charge.
Last week, UPPCL had issued a notification announcing the addition of a 10% fuel surcharge to June electricity bills. The move was justified as a measure to offset the financial strain caused by rising fuel costs. However, the regulatory commission found the proposed surcharge to be in violation of regulations and immediately stayed it. The commission believes that the provision for this surcharge violates the Electricity Act, 2003 and related rules. UPPCL has been asked to explain its stance within seven days.
