In a devastating display of military might, Russia launched a massive aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight, firing over 700 drones and 50 missiles. The attack, which is one of the biggest since the war began, has left multiple casualties and widespread destruction in its wake. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least two people were killed and 56 others injured in the strikes, which targeted various locations across the city, including residential buildings, schools, and government offices.
The combined attack, which involved 600 strike drones and 90 air, sea, and ground-launched missiles, was launched using four types of missiles, including the hypersonic Oreshnik missile, which Moscow said was launched in retaliation for Kyiv's attacks on civilian targets inside Russia. The Oreshnik missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads, was used for the first time in November 2024, when it was deployed against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. It was used again in January in the western Lviv region, and this latest attack marks the third time the weapon has been used in the four-year war.
