Indian shuttlers experienced contrasting fortunes at the Super 750 tournament in Australia on Thursday, as HS Prannoy suffered a stunning second-round upset while PV Sindhu and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured victories to keep their campaigns alive.
Prannoy, who had defeated World No. 5 Jonatan Christie just a day earlier, appeared firmly in control against Singaporean Loh Kean Yew in a tightly contested three-game match. Leading 14-11 in the decider, the Indian’s game suddenly unravelled as seven consecutive points were lost, with multiple smashes and pushes falling into the net. From 14-11, the score flipped dramatically to 15-21, and despite desperate attempts to adjust—including playing closer to the net and trying high parallels—the shuttle repeatedly failed to cross the net. “Two smashes inexplicably went into the net,” noted observers, while pushes and lifts also failed to land in bounds. Prannoy ultimately fell 18-21, 21-16, 21-15, ending his hopes of reaching the quarterfinals. The defeat came despite a strong start to the tournament, where he had looked composed and controlled until the inexplicable dip in form.
