The Indian government is set to introduce a new policy to promote urea production based on coal gasification. The primary objectives of this policy are to reduce the country’s reliance on imported natural gas, achieve self-sufficiency in urea production, and strengthen energy security. Currently, India imports nearly 25% of the natural gas used for urea production. The government believes that coal gasification technology can significantly reduce this dependence.
In coal gasification, raw coal and pet coke are oxidized at high temperatures to produce synthetic gas (syngas), which contains hydrogen and carbon monoxide. This syngas is then combined with nitrogen extracted from the air to produce ammonia, and urea is subsequently manufactured with the help of carbon dioxide. The key advantage of this technology is that it replaces natural gas with coal, thereby reducing import dependence and leveraging the country’s vast coal reserves.
