A massive demolition drive was carried out by the district administration in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to clear encroachments under the widening project of State Highway-17 (SH-17). During the operation, several illegal religious and commercial structures built on government land were demolished. According to officials, this road connects Ahmedabad to Chotila in Surendranagar district and is considered crucial for connectivity from central Gujarat to Rajkot. During the encroachment removal, three shrines, six shops, and a part of a cemetery were cleared. DSP Tapan Singh Dodia stated that approximately six meters of land from the cemetery fell within the project area for road widening, necessitating its removal. The administration has clarified that the action was taken solely to free up government land.
