Political turmoil has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Eight councillors, including the Chairman of Bhadreswar Municipality in Hooghly district, have submitted their resignations simultaneously. The resignations have triggered a war of words between the TMC and opposition parties. While the councillors cite respect for public opinion and taking responsibility for the party’s loss as their reasons, the opposition alleges that the moves are an attempt to evade corruption charges.
Bhadreswar Municipality Chairman Praloy Chakraborty stated that he resigned out of respect for public sentiment and accepted responsibility for the TMC candidate’s defeat in the Assembly polls. He submitted his resignation to the municipality’s Executive Officer on Thursday. Chakraborty added that he later learned several others had also resigned. However, he clarified that his decision was personal and not influenced by any pressure. “I resigned for personal reasons,” he said. “Earlier, I felt motivated to work when people supported me. Now, those who have public support should carry on.”
