Mumbai, June 16, 2024 — The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to withdraw permission for Qurbani (sacrifice) ahead of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Azha). The decision was taken just a night before the festival, sparking outrage in the Muslim community. Community leaders have termed the move as political interference and have targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to the Muslim community, the BMC’s decision to withdraw permission for Qurbani was made under pressure from anti-social elements. Leaders have alleged that the BJP government is continuously interfering in the religious practices of Muslims. Various Muslim organisations in Mumbai have protested this decision and demanded that the government immediately revoke it.
BMC officials, however, stated that the decision to withdraw permission for Qurbani was taken for administrative reasons. Though they refused to provide detailed information on the matter, a senior BMC official said the decision was made to maintain law and order in the city. The official, however, did not name any particular community in this context.
