The suspected gunman, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when confronted by officers. According to Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies, the "series of homicides" took place at two residences and a business in the city. The incident began when police received a call around 12:12 pm local time, reporting a shooting at one of the homes. Upon arrival, officers found four victims dead at the scene. McFarland, who had left the home before police arrived, was later located by officers on a trail along the Mississippi River. During the confrontation, McFarland took his own life, and despite efforts by officers and EMS personnel to render aid, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
