New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has criticised the practice of making people sing the entire *Vande Mataram* at official events, calling it cumbersome and unnecessary. Tharoor argued that forcing attendees to sing the full song at government or public functions could place undue pressure on them. His remarks have reignited debates surrounding the national song, *Vande Mataram*, which have long been marked by differing political and social perspectives.
Tharoor clarified that he has no personal objection to *Vande Mataram*. However, he pointed out that not everyone can comfortably sing the entire song. He highlighted that some individuals may not fully understand the lyrics or their meaning, making it feel like a compulsion rather than a voluntary act. The veteran parliamentarian believes that expressing national sentiment can be done in multiple ways, and singing the complete song should not be treated as mandatory.
