Tirunelveli district administration has launched a stringent crackdown against pollution in the Thamirabarani river, following repeated violations of cleanliness norms. Collector R. Sukumar conducted on-site inspections on consecutive days—first on Monday and again on Saturday—at the stretch in front of the Papanasa Swamy temple in Papanasam. The visits were aimed at reviewing the ongoing dredging work and assessing the effectiveness of measures to prevent the dumping of clothes and other waste materials into the river.
During his Saturday inspection, Mr. Sukumar observed that despite prior warnings, individuals continued to bathe in the river using soap and shampoo, and others were indiscriminately throwing plastic waste into the water or along the riverbanks. In response, he issued strict directives to local authorities to impose heavy fines on such offenders. He emphasized that any violation of river cleanliness rules would result in immediate penalties.
