On the occasion of World Nutrition Day, it is crucial for parents to understand the correct nutritional needs of their children. Experts say that a balanced intake of protein, fiber, and calcium is essential for the physical and mental development of children. However, the question arises as to what amount of these nutrients is required for children according to their age. According to nutrition expert Dr. Aarti Gupta, infants from birth to 6 months require only breastfeeding or formula milk. Children between 6 months to 1 year need to start solid food along with approximately 11 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber daily. On the other hand, children between 1 to 3 years require 13 grams of protein, 19 grams of fiber, and 700 milligrams of calcium. Similarly, children between 4 to 8 years require 19 grams of protein, 25 grams of fiber, and 1,000 milligrams of calcium. For children between 9 to 13 years, the protein requirement increases to 34 grams (boys) and 31 grams (girls), fiber requirement is 26 to 31 grams, and calcium is 1,300 milligrams. Experts suggest that instead of supplements, consuming nutritious home-cooked food like lentils, green vegetables, fruits, milk, yogurt, eggs, and fish is more beneficial to meet the requirements of these nutrients. Additionally, children should be encouraged to drink plenty of water.
